Growth and Flexibility
Campuses are like small cities.
They support residences, administrations, classrooms, laboratories,
libraries, retail outlets, newspapers, food distribution,
security functions, athletic and recreational facilities,
health facilities and business operations. They require
intranets, extranets, and high-speed communications. They
warehouse and distribute content, and their populations
are dynamic and fluctuating. Moreover, as with cities, services
must be available around-the-clock. In summary, they are
very complex IT environments.
To meet their communication as easily as possible, colleges
and universities require the most flexible and scalable
solutions available. Their networks must cost-effectively
expand or adapt to support emerging applications, new technologies,
and increasing student and faculty populations. To conserve
IT budgets, they should be reliable and simple to manage.
They need to be standards-based to eliminate obsolescence.
School systems should also offer the versatility to restore
communications quickly in the event of disaster, providing
campuses with safety and peace-of-mind.
